Start Low and Go Slow: First-Time Cannabis Tips That Keep It Comfy

A single green cannabis bud on a clean white background

If there is one cannabis rule I'd tattoo on every beginner's hand, it's this: start low and go slow. Four little words, and they're the difference between a cozy, giggly evening and a long night of wondering why the ceiling is so interesting. Here's what the rule really means, and how to use it the very first time.

As always: adults 21+ only, where cannabis is legal. This is friendly education, not medical advice. If you take medications or have a health condition, check with your doctor first.

What "start low and go slow" actually means

Start low means take a small amount, smaller than you think you need. Go slow means wait long enough to feel the full effect before you even think about having more.

Why does this matter so much? Because you can always take a little more later, but you can't take any back. Most uncomfortable first experiences happen because someone took too much, or took a second dose before the first one finished kicking in.

Think of it like trying a new hot sauce. You wouldn't pour half the bottle on your first taco. You'd try a drop, see how it feels, and add more next time if you liked it. Cannabis works the same way, except the "next time" might be tomorrow, not five minutes from now. And this rule isn't just for total beginners. It's smart any time you try a new product, a new brand, or come back after a long break.

Know how fast your product works

"Go slow" looks different depending on what you're using. A rough guide:

  • Smoking or vaping: you'll usually feel it within minutes. One small puff, then wait at least 10 to 15 minutes before deciding on another.
  • Edibles and drinks: they can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, and they last much longer. Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. Seriously, set a timer.
  • Tinctures under the tongue: often somewhere in between. Read the label and start with the smallest suggested amount.

Our Products Guide lists how fast each type hits and how long it lasts, so you can plan your evening around it.

How small is "low"?

For edibles, many people new to cannabis start with a very small amount of THC, often around 2.5 mg or less, which can be half or even a quarter of a standard piece. For smoking or vaping, low means one small puff, not a full session.

Your body, your weight, what you ate and your mood all play a part, so there's no single perfect number. The safest move is to start smaller than you think, write down what you took, and notice how you feel. If a budtender asks what you're looking for, say, "Something low in THC for a first-timer." They hear it all the time.

Set up your comfy zone before you start

A good first experience is mostly about planning, and planning is the easy part. Here's how to set the stage:

  1. Pick a safe, familiar place. Your home or a trusted friend's home is ideal.
  2. Bring a buddy. Ideally someone who has used cannabis before and will stay sober-ish.
  3. Clear your schedule. No work calls, no errands, nothing important for the rest of the day.
  4. No driving. Period. Don't drive high, and don't ride with someone who is. Plan to stay put or use a rideshare.
  5. Have water and snacks ready. Your future self will thank you.
  6. Queue up something easy. A funny show, a favorite playlist, a puzzle. Nothing scary.
  7. Skip the alcohol. Mixing can make things feel stronger and less predictable.

Signs you should stop and just ride it out

Even with a careful plan, you might feel more than you expected. That's okay. Common signs you've had enough include a racing heart, feeling anxious or paranoid, dizziness or feeling very sleepy. When that happens:

  • Stop taking more. Don't "chase" a better feeling.
  • Sit or lie down somewhere calm and comfortable.
  • Sip water and have a light snack.
  • Breathe slowly and remind yourself the feeling will pass.
  • Let your buddy know how you feel. Sometimes a calm voice is all you need.

If you have chest pain, trouble breathing, or you're truly worried, call for medical help right away. And if a child or pet gets into cannabis, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or 911.

Keep a little cannabis journal

This sounds nerdy, but it's my favorite beginner trick. After each experience, jot down:

  • What product and how much you took
  • When you took it and when you felt it
  • How you felt, good and not so good
  • Whether you'd take more, less or the same next time

After a few tries you'll have your own personal guide, built on real experience instead of guesswork. That's how you go from nervous newbie to calm and confident.

Your start low and go slow game plan

Let's put it all together in one easy routine: check that you're 21+ and it's legal where you are, pick a low-THC product, take a small amount, set a timer, and wait the full time before you decide anything. Stay home, stay hydrated, and never drive.
